The State government says it has acquired one hundred hectares of farm land for seed production at Ayamelum Local Government area.

The State Project Coordinator, IFAD Value Chain Development Programme, VCDP, Mr Nnamdi Agwuncha disclosed this during an interactive meeting between VCDP farmers organizations and the relevant state and federal agencies.
The meeting which took place at the conference hall of the State Agricultural Development Programme in Awka, attracted IFAD VCDP farmers, Nigerian Agricultural Insurance Corporation, Standards Organization of Nigeria, NIMET and National Seed Council.
Declaring the meeting open, Mr. Agwuncha who described it as very important, announced that they have commenced the process of getting the farmers produce certified by the Standards Organization of Nigeria for the international market.
In his presentation, the state Branch Manager, Nigerian Agricultural Insurance Corporation, Mr. Andrew Uzomah, said the Corporation among other things was established to provide financial support to farmers where loss to crops or livestock arises from natural hazards, to promote agricultural production and encourage provision of credit by financial institutions to farmers among others.
Mr Uzomah stated that before a farmer can qualify for indemnity, the insurance cover must have been obtained before the loss occurred, in addition to having a valid insurance cover, and followed laid down practice for crop and livestock production among numerous others.
Also speaking, the State Coordinator, Standards Organization of Nigeria, Mr Nwaoma Olujie said before a product can be certified, there must be a thorough inspection of the factory, production process, site and testing of the products to ensure that it conforms with international standards.
On his part, a Meteorologist from NIMET, Mr Nnamdi Nwaeze, who said that weather is dynamic, maintained that available weather forecast result this year has no adverse effect as all predicted are still in normal range.
