An eighteen-member peace committee for Aguleri and Umueri has been inaugurated by the state government.
Members of the peace committee were drawn from both Aguleri and Umueri including their Presidents-general.
Briefing newsmen shortly after the inauguration performed behind closed doors, the Transition Committee Chairman for Anambra East, Hon. Pius Ifeadi, thanked God that the two communities have came together to seek for peace as war and conflict always have negative effects on those involved.
He urged youths of both communities to emulate their fathers who suggested the peace initiative for the good of all.
The traditional ruler of Aguleri, Igwe Christopher Idigo said he felt elated and fulfilled as he has long expected a peace move as this, happening especially now that Umueri has a traditional ruler that can talk on that level, noting that they understand themselves as brothers.
He stressed the need for them to de-emphasize grouping of problems and globalizing it to cause unnecessary war but they should rather individualize problems adding that the peace committee will be handling every problem between the two communities for maintenance of peace.
On his part, the traditional ruler of Umueri, Igwe Sir Benneth Emeka, said that Umueri and Aguleri are brothers and need to live in peace.
Igwe Emeka advised youths of both communities not to take laws into their hands but be calm and listen to the leadership of the communities as they are committed to training and empowering youths in Umueri on different skills in line with the Governor Willie Obiano's empowerment programme for youths.
In their separate remarks, the President- General of Umueri, Chief Pius Okonkwo, the Joint Chairman of the Aguleri - Umueri Peace Committee, Chief Raph Igwah, and High Chief Samuel Umeadi expressed happiness over the peace initiative, and prayed it will yield better result.
