A study that will seek to develop lasting solutions to the menace of flooding in Onitsha metropolis has commenced.

The study which would be carried out by the Nigerian Erosion and Watershed Management Project, NEWMAP and support from the state government through Enviplan International Limited will focus on the drainage discharge platforms in the ancient commercial city.
Speaking at a one – day stakeholders consultative forum, the project coordinator Anambra NEWMAP, Mr Michael Ivenso said the study was aimed at mitigating the perennial flooding in the metropolis and environs, explaining that the present state government under the leadership of Governor Willie Obiano has sourced funds from the Special Climate Change Fund , SCCF to address the menace.
On his part, the Obi of Onitsha , Igwe Nnaemeka Achebe observed that the issue of flooding , silted drains , building on flood channels and waste management has been a major bane to the development of Onitsha .
The Obi of Onitsha who was represented by the President General of the community , Chief Chinyelugo Anionwu commended the efforts of the state government through NEWMAP to undertake lasting solutions to the problem.
In their separate remarks , the Transition Committee Chairman , Onitsha South Local Government Area, Mr. Emeka Asoanya and the Managing Director, Anambra state Waste management Agency , ASWAMA, Mr. Phil Chinwuba explained that the issue of waste management requires attitudinal change and the cooperation of the public, calling on citizens to imbibe the right environmental practices.
A master plan which will guide the study has been designed with detailed blueprint for the implementation of infrastructures and projects at reducing flooding, identify and assess the storm water drainage needs of the town.
