Anambra Times | News at your doorstep..

The rumour making the rounds that the National Agency for Food Drugs Administration and Control, NAFDAC, has declared Anambra Rice dangerous for consumption has been described as false and unfounded.
The Managing Director of Stine Industries who has the franchise to produce and package Anambra Rice, Chief Akai Egwuonwu made this known while reacting to the rumour in Awka.
Government House Correspondent Kenechukwu has more on the story.
Anambra Rice which became a reality through the support of the present administration under Governor Willie Obiano, had its registration and market authorization granted to Stine Industries in January, 2016.
Ever since, the State government has been a major patronizer of the product, buying off over 75 percent of the rice produced while the producer remained a major offtaker in the rice belt, with over 80 percent of the paddy used gotten from local rice manufacturers across the state.
However, the product had of recent come under attack especially in the online media following a recent move by NAFDAC to ensure that the product's quality is maintained and to check illegal use of the franchise by other producers.
Reacting to the online reports, Chief Egwuonwu made it clear that NAFDAC only raised alarm over the adulteration and counterfeiting of the registered brand of Anambra rice by some outgrowers who want to take advantage of the favourable market condition for the product this christmass season.
Chief Egwuonwu explained that parboiling is done at the Stine Mills with Stainless Steel Tanks unlike the rusty metal drums used for local parboiling which contains chemical substances that are dangerous to human health and said the registered brand of Anambra Rice is well-polished, double sortexed, stone-free, well-whitened and with NAFDAC number.
He harped on the need for other producers to endeavour to register and certify their products so as to guarantee traceability, if any challenge is encountered with the products.
The investor who commended the overwhelming support of the state government towards encouraging Agro-investments in the state which guaranteed that Anambra rice emerged African Best Rice 2016/2017, assured that they are committed to improving on their processes to ensure that the rice remains sound and good for consumption
