Anambra State Iriji festival held at Alex Ekwueme Square, Awka

The 21 Local Government Areas, LGAs, in Anambra State jointly celebrated the New Yam festival.This is the first time the state government and the LGAs would be jointly celebrating this festival.They used the opportunity to express appreciation to God for bountiful harvest.
The New Yam festival, otherwise known as `Iriji or `Iwaji’, festival was organised by the Anambra State Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Diaspora Affairs. The event, which took place at Ekwueme Square, Awka, featured yam competition as well as performances by various music and masquerade troupes.Governor Willie Obiano described the New Yam Festival as an ancient Igbo cultural heritage, aimed at promoting unity among the people.He explained that his administration would continue to support positive aspects of Igbo culture.

The governor noted that his government would always promote private partnership, especially in the areas of agriculture to enhance food sufficiency and as well boosting export of yams to foreign countries. Performing the yam cutting ritual, the traditional ruler of Okpuno in Awka South Council Area, Igwe Sunday Okafor said although the various communities of the state have been performing their IwaJi, the event was unique as it has prospects for the sustenance of the peace, unity and stability in the state.
The traditional ruler of Ojoto, Igwe .Dr Dennis Okafor, (Ezebube π, theOjo of Ojoto) commended the unprecedented achievements of governor Obiano in three and half years, especially in security, prompt payment of workers’ salaries, recent promotion of all Anambra deserving workers, agricultural revolution, road infrastructure, repositioning of educational sector, operation light up Anambra, and giving Awka and Onitsha a befitting face lift.

Igwe Dennis Okafor further called on NdiAnambra to support the re-election bid of the governor, to sustain and consolidate the good work the governor is doing.
