The Chairman of Ogbaru Local Government Area, Hon. Arinzechukwu Awogu, has commended a former Deputy Governor of Anambra State and the Anambra North Senatorial candidate of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Prince Chinedu Emeka for intervening in the crisis brewing between Akiliogidi, a Community in Ogbaru Local Government Area and the people of Anam over the sustained attacks on a disputed island inhabited by farmers and fishermen from Anam Community.

The Ogbaru Council Chairman stated this in a meeting with elders and Community leaders from Akiliogidi, he had summoned them to a meeting aimed at resolving the Igweship crisis rocking the Community.

Hon. Awogu appreciated Prince Chinedu Emeka for wading into the matter, saying that his intervention brought restraint on the part of Anam Community who were preparing for a revenge attack.

Recall that Akiliogidi and the people of Okpai in Delta State have been locked in a brutal communial conflict over the ownership of Akpatioma-Agwe-Akili, an island belonging to Akiliogidi Community in Ogbaru Local Government Area which the people of Okpai are laying claims to because of its closeness to their Community, insisting that the island is closer to them than Akiliogidi even though that history has it that the people of Akiliogidi migrated to their present abode from the island and now uses the island for farming.

It was learnt that Okpai warriors in 2013 invaded the island that has the following camps: Akpu Usu, Odo-Opkopka, Enu-Wayi, Ihenwakaife, Anidima among others and sacked remnants of Akiliogidi on the island and brought in Anam and Ibaji farmers and fishermen to the island who now pay yearly royalties to Okpai people to the charging of Akiliogidi people, consequent upon which Anam and Ibaji settlers on the island became victims of Akiliogidi repeated attacks aimed at retaking the island from Okpai and thus making Anam Community unwilling entrant into the conflict.

The Council Chairman who had in pursuit of peace directed that youths of Akiliogidi desist from further aggression on the disputed island as government was already looking into the matter, said that he has met with Igwe Mmiata Anam, His Royal Highness, Igwe Sylvester Nnose (Eze Di Ebube 1 of Anam) and also spoken with Igwe Umuenwelum Anam, His Royal Highness Igwe Okeke M. O. Okoye (Akataka 1 of Umuenwelum) and had assured the two Anam Royal fathers of steps taken to ensure that Anam Community on the disputed island does not suffer further attacks. He also said that the two Igwes have continued to assist in the quest for peaceful resolution of the crisis.

It has also been reported of the attack by Uchi Community in Delta State on Akiliogidi and Ossomala Communities of Ogbaru Local Government Area. The bottom line of these attacks on the defenseless Ogbaru Communities is oil. As these areas have witnessed in recent times, increased oil exploration by oil giant, Shell Petroleum and Sternly Global Oil Resources.
