Those occupying leadership positions have been called upon to place importance on public opinions as the corner stone for genuine sustainable development.
A Professor of Mass Communication, Mrs Stella Okunna, made the call at the Forty-Third inaugural lecture Series of the Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka.
Professor Okunna called on leaders to re-orientate their mind set and believe that they have in themselves the ideas that are needed to bring true development and adopt the new model for both rural and urban developmental .
Appraising the situation in Nigeria, the University Teacher said political leaders are handicapped by costs of governance, greed and ostentatious living in achieving development, stressing that the onus lies on leaders to adopt new ways of bringing development that would impact positively on people's lives.
Taking the Anambra Integrated Development Strategy, ANIDS and the present administration's Choose-Your-Project- Initiative , as cases of study, Professor Okunna called on religious, social, traditional, cultural, and educational leaders to jettison the authoritarian paradigm of leadership in order to achieve sustainable development.
Earlier in an opening remark, the Chairman on the occasion and Vice Chancellor of the University, Professor Joseph Ahaneku said the purpose of instituting the inaugural lecture is to commercialize researches made in the University and provide forum for basic interaction between the academic world and the society, to bring positive results.
The inaugural lecture attracted the academia, government functionaries, traditional rulers, media professionals and captains of industry.
