The State House of Assembly has passed a resolution urging Governor Willie Obiano to direct the Commissioner for Environment to urgently call back the contracting firm handling the Saint Pius primary School Ifite- Enu Nimo erosion control project.
The resolution was sequel to a motion sponsored by the member representing Njikoka Two Constituency, Dr. Pete Ibida and twenty eight others during yesterday’s plenary.
Moving the motion , Dr Ibida lamented that part of Saint Pius Primary School building collapsed and the access road to the school has been gulped by erosion menace thereby creating untold hardship to the pupils, teachers and residents of the area.
According to him, several houses, the school building and valuable properties including farm lands are at the verge of being swallowed completely by erosion if an urgent step is not taken.
Supporting the motion , the member representing Anambra East Constituency, Chief Obinna Emeneka, described the situation as very pathetic, suggesting that if the contracting firm handling the project is not living up to expectation, government should terminate it and re-award it to another competent firm to salvage the situation.
On his part, the member representing Anaocha Two Constituency, Mr. Charles Ezeani, stressed the need for the Ministry of Environment to rise to the occasion by directing the contracting firm to go back to site to avoid a stop to academic activities in the school.
Speaker of the House, Barrister Rita Maduagwu, supported the motion and read out the resolution of the House .
