In line with Governor Willie Obiano's determination in making
the state self sufficient in rice production, rice farmers have achieved three
cycles rice farming in a year.
The success story which was achieved through the state
International Fund for Agricultural Development, IFAD, Value Chain Development
Program, VCDP, an intervention program attracted by the Obiano led
administration recorded six-point-three tons per hectare.
Farmers participating in the state International Fund for
Agricultural Development, Value Chain Development Program have harvested and
threshed the first set of the dry season rice farm transplanted in November
last year.
The farm
located at Idoko Owusi in Omor, Ayamelum council area, will wittiness another
transplanting in March which will be due for harvest in June before the wet
season cycle.
Speaking
during the harvesting and threshing, the Assistant Agric Production Officer,
IFAD VCDP, Mr. Joseph Okonkwo said with total compliance to the best agronomic
practices and early supply of farm inputs to farmers, the achievement of food
sufficiency is assured.
Mr. Okonkwo urged farmers to embrace modern and mechanized
farming and desist from orthodox way of broadcasting as according to him it
often results to opoor yield.
The owner of the rice farm, Mr. Michael Afune who confirmed
that they can comfortably cultivate three cycles of rice farming in a year
said, he recorded more yield in the dry season than in the wet season.
He applauded the state IFAD VCDP for equipping them with the
threshing machine and other numerous farm inputs but however, appealed for the
sinking of tube wales and pesticides
