A Parade ceremony held at the Alex Ekwueme Square in Awka as part of activities marking the nationwide celebrations, attracted officers and men of the Nigerian Armed Forces, top State Government functionaries, community leaders among others. 
Governor Obiano had on arrival, mounted the dais to take salute after which he went to inspect the color party comprising men of the Nigerian Army, the Navy and the Legion. 
The governor then proceeded to the cenotaph where he led the order of personalities that laid wreath who included Deputy Governor Dr Nkem Okeke, the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Bar Rita Maduagwu, the State Chief Judge, Justice Peter Umeadi, a representative of the traditional rulers, heads of Military agencies and the Police in the State.
Speaking during the event, Governor Obiano noted that the ceremony presents an opportunity to reflect on the sacrifices made by the Nigerian Armed Forces towards protecting the sovereignty of the nation.
The governor who emphasized that no reward will be enough to repay the soldiers for their efforts, said the ceremony is more apt in view of the increasing contemporary challenges the country face and the need to accord them the required support for optimal performance. 

He prayed that God will grant the Armed Forces the courage to continue to surmount the challenges that confront them in their task of defending the nation.
